VIC: Processions, services, prayers to mark Good Friday
Christians in Victoria are commemorating Good Friday -- the day Christ died almost 2,000
years ago -- with services, processions and prayer vigils.
At St Paul's Anglican Cathedral, the traditional three-hour devotion for Good Friday will
begin at midday, conducted by Archbishop KEITH RAYNER.
At St Patrick's Catholic Cathedral, Archbishop GEORGE PELL will this afternoon lead the
solemn liturgy of the Passion, with prayers and the veneration of the cross.
Tonight, in the cathedral and at the nearby Anglican church of St Peter's, there will be
the dramatic Tenebrae (pron: TENNER-bray) service, in which psalms and responses are sung by
candlelight, then in total darkness, symbolising the darkness on the eve of the Resurrection.
Around suburban Melbourne, as well as traditional church services, a number of ecumenical
gatherings and processions to re-enact the journey to Calvary are being held.
