Vic: Hope springs for ancient shipwreck

MELBOURNE, Jan 12 AAP - The legend of an old shipwreck in western Victoria that could
change the history of Australia has been revived by positive wood test results.

Results from tests carried out on a piece of wood discovered under the sand dunes between
Warrnambool and Port Fairy have strengthened hopes that the remains may be those of a
1522 shipwreck.

Wood identification expert Jugo Ilic said he had identified the wood sample as a white
oak, which originated from the United States or Europe.
